ExRx.net vs Trainerize

Two tools coaches often weigh against each other, compared on the same terms.

ExRx.net

FreemiumTool

A long-running exercise encyclopaedia with muscle-by-muscle indexes, kinesiology notes and instructions — a reference library rather than a coaching app.

Trainerize

PaidSoftware

An all-in-one online coaching platform — build workouts, publish them to a branded client app, track progress and message clients in one place.

Pricing

ExRx.net: Most of the library is free; some sections require membership

Trainerize: Tiered by active client count; free trial

What it is

ExRx.net

An old-fashioned, deeply indexed exercise directory: pick a muscle, get every exercise that trains it, with mechanics, joint actions and instructions. It looks like it was built in 2003 because much of it was, which is not a criticism.

Trainerize

The category's default answer. You build programmes from an exercise library with video, assign them to clients, and they follow along in a phone app that also handles check-ins, photos, body stats and messaging.

Best for

ExRx.net

Checking your own understanding before you prescribe something, and finding regressions or variations when a client cannot perform the obvious movement.

Trainerize

Coaches running a book of online clients who want one system rather than a spreadsheet, a video folder and a WhatsApp thread.

Watch out for

ExRx.net

It is a reference, not a programme. The presentation is dated, and some of the deeper material sits behind a membership.

Trainerize

Pricing steps up with active clients, so the maths only works once you are charging properly. The workout builder is powerful but fiddly — budget a weekend to build your template library before your first client sees it.

Editorial comparison — nothing here is paid placement. Pricing changes often; treat the vendor’s own page as the truth. How we review
